There has been so much written about the benefits of SharePoint – but one area that is still lacking is examining what this product will actually do to your business. By this I mean that your internal business processes will change (or needs to change) in order for SharePoint to be successful. That being said – let’s examine one specific use case: Corporate Collaboration. I choose corporate collaboration as it is near and dear to my heart I believe SharePoint has so much to offer by providing efficiency to even the most basic business processes.

Here is the use case, a small cross-departmental project. This is not a project that who’s outcome will help define the success of the overall company. It can even be something as simple as designing a t-shirt for the company’s picnic. As silly as that might seem – countless teams of people spend time on projects just like this every day. The next few posts will show how SharePoint was designed to bring efficiency to activities just like this one.

So in most businesses today, here is how this type of project would be managed:

So what’s wrong with a file share? There is nothing technically wrong with using a file share to manage the project – and there isn’t anything technically wrong with running in combat boots – it’s just not very efficient!

Over the next few posts I will be building a small SharePoint solution to help solve this problem. Tune back in!
