Everyone – repeat after me… I will not use more than 260 characters in my SharePoint Document names/URLs.

I am not assuming that you are actually using 260 characters to name your documents. SharePoint has a file URL maximum length of 260 characters. Unfortunately, SharePoint isn’t great about checking URL length at the time you upload your file. The result is a doc library and/or a DB that behaves in inconsistent fashion. I have just spent the past day troubleshooting a document library that wasn’t allowing the users to upload any new documents and the reason is many, many files already being well beyond the 260 URL limit.

In all honesty, there are other issues w/ this DB – but the URL length is in no way helping the situation. DO you self – and your IT staff a favor: Don’t use SharePoint as a glorified file-share. Joel Oleson has a great post on prescriptive guidance on storing files in SharePoint.
